Summer officially starts tomorrow! While it’s true that New York City can be a bit of a ghost town (relatively speaking) on the weekends during the warmer months, when its residents flee to the beaches of Long Island or their cabins upstate, staying in the city for a summer weekend can offer a lot of fun, too. One of our favorite activities around the city in the summer is touring its many public art installation al fresco.
Here’s an overview of a few of our favorite places to see art around New York.
1. The High Line.
Without a doubt, this is our favorite place for an early morning stroll. Stop by Chelsea Market to pick up a coffee, and walk this old, elevated railway full of beautiful outdoor art installations. Since The High Line opened in 2009, more than 120 artists from around the world have displayed their work there, via murals, sculptures, and more.
2. Randall’s Island.
Each summer, the Randall’s Island Park Alliance presents FLOW, a series of art installations along the park’s shoreline. One of the highlights this year: Kant Smith’s “Ghost House.”
3. Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Queens.
This a great place to start your art tour. This summer, an exhibition at the park called Wayfinding: 100 NYC Public Sculptures, is made up of signs and GPS coordinates for 100 of New York’s top public sculptures.
4.Brooklyn Bridge Park and City Hall Park.
Now through December, selections from Danh Vo’s “We the People”– scaled replicas of pieces of the Statue of Liberty–will be on display outdoors.
