Looking for a new way to get creative with your family photos? Why not turn them into cyanotypes? The early, easy photographic printing process from the late 1800s makes even candid vacation shots look like professional art pieces, and is one of our favorite (and most stylish) ways to help our clients preserve their family memories.
Cyanotype printing, also known as blueprinting, uses a simple chemical mixture and UV rays to create beautiful blue-and-white photos from everyday objects, negatives, and even digital images. When complete, they have the feel of on-trend Victorian silhouettes, but with a unique, abstract, and colorful spin.
It’s especially fun to hold the original photo and cyanotype side-by-side. Here’s a before photo, a shot of ILevel founder David Kassel’s daughter.
And here’s the cyanotype version:
Awesome, right?
The finished products are just right for mixing into an existing family photo wall, creating a stand-alone gallery, or gifting to loved ones for holidays and special occasions.
