Sometimes, we just want to get out of Manhattan. When the urge strikes us, we go in search of art at some of our favorite art centers and galleries within driving distance of New York City (one is even within city limits, though it feels worlds away). Visiting these exciting institutions is a great excuse to take a leisurely drive and get away for a few hours (though all are accessible via public transportation/mass transit, too!), and we always feel refreshed upon returning. Here, three of our favorites.
Wave Hill
Wave Hill is a breathtaking public garden and cultural center in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. It offers beautiful views of the Hudson River, 28 acres of lush gardens, and a gallery space that features a rotating lineup of emerging and established artists, called the Glyndor Gallery. The current exhibitions, Bronx Calling and Sunroom Project Space, both highlight the work of New York-area emerging artists.
Wave Hill is also an easy day trip for those without cars, because it’s accessible by subway.
Dia: Beacon, Riggio Galleries
Located in the Hudson Valley town of Beacon, the Dia: Beacon, Riggio Galleries showcases holdings of the Dia Art Foundation from the 1960s to the present, as well as special exhibits, in 240,000 square feet of space along the Hudson River. It’s the sister gallery to the Art Foundation’s Chelsea location, and houses works from prominent artists including Andy Warhol, Cy Twombly, Robert Whitman, Joseph Beuys, Dan Flavin, Blinky Palermo and Fred Sandback. Again – it’s a nice car ride from Manhattan, but for the car-less, the gallery is a five-minute walk from the Metro-North Hudson line.
Storm King
The Storm King Art Center is also located in the Hudson Valley, about an hour’s drive north of New York City. The center, more of a park than a gallery, is situated on 500 acres of manicured land, dotted with more than 100 sculptures. In addition to its permanent collection, Storm King also hosts regular special programs and exhibits. It’s a must-see for art enthusiasts (just look at the photo below!).
