Last week, we talked about art rules for small homes. How to make a big statement in tight quarters, without overwhelming the space.
Today, we’re going to focus on exactly the opposite: art ideas for large spaces.
As much as New York City apartments can be tight and cramped, Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Long Island City are also full of that epitome of the city-dweller home, the loft. And the high ceilings, abundance of windows and open spaces can present a whole new set of challenges when it comes to art. The pieces chosen for a home with lots of space (whether it’s actually a loft, an open-concept suburban home, or a converted barn in the country) have to match the scale and grandness of the space they occupy, or they risk looking underwhelming or out of place.
We recently hung art in two large apartments in Manhattan. Each client took a different approach to decorating their large space, but the end results of both projects were simply stunning. Here’s a look at each project. Hopefully they will inspire you when decorating your own large space!
1. This West-Side loft in Manhattan had high ceilings, sweeping views, and a wide-open floorplan. The space wall also super-modern and minimal, with gallery-white walls. An apartment like this one is truly the perfect space to showcase bold artwork–bright colors, abstract concepts, large-scale works–anything goes when you have a blank canvas.
2. The second client took a completely different approach to decorating the high ceiling in their living room. Instead of choosing singular, bold pieces, they opted for lots of smaller ones, arranged together to create a high impact effect. The look is less stark, and more eclectic than in the loft space, but both arrangements turned out beautifully.
