Top Spots to See Art in the Parks in New York City

New York might not be considered an “outdoorsy” city, at least not compared to places like Denver or San Diego, but if you look hard enough, there are actually a lot of ways to enjoy some fresh air within the five boroughs. There’s Central Park, the Highline, the driving range at Chelsea Piers, even kayaks that can be rented to cruise around the Hudson River. But one of our favorite summer activities? Visiting the various sites of Art in the Parks.

Through the program, the city has installed temporary artwork in parks across New York since 1967. Touring some of the exhibits each year provides a great way to learn about new artists and styles, in addition to offering a way to appreciate art outdoors. Here, a few installations we’re hoping to see this year.

Carol Bove’s Caterpillar commission will be on display at the Highline through May 2014. The artist created seven sculptures for the outdoor space, including Celeste, below.

Orly Genger’s Red Yellow and Blue is on display at Madison Square Park through September 8, 2013. How can you not be intrigued by its large-as-life size?

Riverside Park is home to a few installations this year, including High Rise by Charles Ginnever.
