We know what you’re thinking. The middle of November is a strange time to be writing about art in an outdoor space. But actually, we feel like the timing is perfect! That’s because as soon as November rolls around in New York City and the tri-state area, things outside start to look a little, well, drab. Planters stand empty, trees are bare, and the flowers in the parks are long gone.
Unlike flora and foliage, though, art can add life to an outdoor space no matter what time of year it is. Even if you’ll just be looking at your deck, balcony, or patio from the inside for the next six months, adding art to the space can make the view much more enjoyable.
The key to enjoying al fresco art year round is, of course, to choose something that’s weatherproof. These worn-in wall sculptures we installed on a balcony recently are the ideal choice.
While you can find specialty gicleé on canvas art designed for outdoor hanging, we generally recommend heartier sculptural works. Any piece made from materials like iron, copper, stone, or fired porcelain should make it through a northeast winter.
