We’ve talked before about the many different ways to display art, including hanging art with a picture rail. But this next project, which we completed a few weeks ago, is one of the most beautiful examples of the method that we’ve ever seen.
The home, sprawling new construction in Georgia, was designed as the owners’ Quail-hunting lodge, but the beautiful soaring ceilings and elaborate architectural detail gave it a grand, historic air that felt like something from Gone With the Wind. The decor was done with the same elegant, old world feel — everything is traditional, antique or meant to look like it. The family’s enviable fine art collection, which in this case was largely centered around animals in keeping with the hunting-lodge theme, simply proved to be the finishing touch that turned the home into a showstopper.
Below is the stunning parlor space, in which we hung an antique mirror and pieces from the homeowner’s art collection, all with ornate gilded frames that matched the formality level in the room. While we’d like to say we can take credit for the beautiful picture rods the artwork is suspended from, alas, we cannot. They picture rods, like the rest of the exquisite detail that give this home its character, were dreamed up by the home’s architect.
While many of the smaller works are actually suspended from the chains, the larger, heavier pieces like the mirror below are only meant to look like they’re hanging.
The picture rail style was continued throughout the space, including into the stately billiards room.
The home turned out to be one of the most beautiful we’ve ever worked on, and the picture-rod technique is one we’re hoping to do more of here in New York.
