When people collect large or heavy pieces, they’re understandably apprehensive. The first thought is often, “How am I going to even get this on my walls?” Luckily, ILevel is here to help. We handle large mirrors, oversized paintings, metal frames, bulky wall sculptures, multi-frame screens, and more all the time. Size & weight are not obstacles, they’re simply variables that require the right preparation, team, and hardware.
Why Heavy Art Is Harder Than It Looks
The most common mistake people make when trying to hang a heavy piece themselves is underestimating what the job entails. They assume one person can handle it, they use the wrong anchors, they fail to account for what their walls are made of. Often, they’ll discover too late that lining up and installing a heavy piece of art is difficult without experience.
And the consequences can be serious. Walls that cannot hold the weight. Art that falls after seeming secure. Damage to the piece, the wall, or both. In the worst cases, safety becomes a real concern. A job done twice costs far more than a job done right the first time.
The Range of Large Art We Install
Not all large art is created equal, and the variety of pieces we handle reflects that. Some of the most common large-format installations we perform include:
Oversized paintings and canvases that span several feet in any direction
Large mirrors, which combine significant weight with the added fragility of glass
Heavy metal frames and sculptural wall pieces with unconventional hanging points
Long cloth and textile works that need to be tensioned and mounted correctly
Multi-panel Asian screens requiring special hardware and careful alignment
Large sculptural pieces that require creative rigging solutions
Some pieces also call for ceiling suspension rather than wall mounting. For the right installation (a floating sculpture, a piece that needs to hang away from the wall, or a space where anchoring is not ideal) we use ceiling-mounted wire systems with specialized hardware. It’s a clean, professional solution that opens up new possibilities for displaying art.

What We Look At Before We Hang Anything
Every installation begins with an assessment of the surface & the pieces to be hung. In New York, wall materials are rarely straightforward. Pre-war buildings often have thick plaster over wooden lath or brick. Post-war buildings may have drywall, plaster over concrete block, or thin partition walls. Modern condos frequently use drywall with metal studs. Some apartments have all of the above on different walls in the same room!
We also look at the hardware already on the piece and ask, “how is this meant to be hung” or “what can it support?” Then we match that with the right hardware for the wall. Using the proper anchors and fasteners matters enormously. Using the wrong ones is how mirrors fall down at 3 am.
When is a Piece Considered Oversized?
Our rule of thumb: if a piece is over 48 inches in any direction, or over 20 pounds, you should have a professional handle it. At that size and weight, the margin for error shrinks and the cost of a mistake goes up fast.
What to Expect on Installation Day
The more information you can share with us in advance, the smoother the job goes. Before we arrive, it helps to have the dimensions & weight of your pieces, details on the hardware already installed (if it comes with it), and any photos or notes on the walls or surfaces.
For complex installations or particularly specific pieces, we will sometimes come by in advance to scope out the space ourselves. This lets us assess the wall conditions firsthand, take measurements, and arrive on the day of installation fully prepared. The right team, the right hardware, and no surprises.
On installation day, we bring the number of handlers the job requires. Heavy and large pieces need multiple people, and we staff every job accordingly. We work efficiently and carefully, and we do not leave until everything is level, secure, and exactly where it should be.
The Unusual Stuff
Some of the most interesting jobs we get called for are not just heavy, they are unusual. Large sculptures with unconventional hanging points. Oversized cloth pieces that need to be tensioned correctly. Screens and panels that require unique mounting solutions. These jobs call for creative problem solving as much as physical strength. We assess the piece and the space and figure out the right approach before a single hole is nailed.
How We Keep Your Art Safe
We treat every piece with white glove care from the moment we arrive. No wall damage, no art damage, no shortcuts. For complex installations, we plan ahead. For all installations, we bring the right people and the right equipment. Your art is handled by trained professionals who understand both the technical and the human side of the work.
