Art Tips for Home Staging

At ILevel, we’re often called in to help real estate agents, home owners, and home stagers figure out what to hang on the walls, and where to hang it when selling a home. Though it seems like a minor detail, what you put on the walls can have a lot of influence over how people feel when they come into a home.

Here are a few of the top art tricks and tips for home staging we’ve learned over the years.

A neat, black-and-white grid like gallery wall isn’t overly personal and showcases the high ceilings in this dining room.

1. Don’t get too personal: Things like family photo walls, and pictures of friends and relatives are part of what makes a house a home. But, they also make it difficult for a potential future homeowner to picture themselves living there. So, stash most of your personal photos away in favor of more generic pieces.

2. Don’t neglect it: When you’re moving, art is typically one of the first things that gets packed away. It’s easy to take down, and setting  it aside also ensures it won’t be damaged during the flurry of packing and moving activity. But, resist the urge and leave at least some of your art on the walls. Bare walls look uninviting and cold.

3. Highlight great architectural features with art: If your home has a beautiful wrap around staircase, line the walls with photos. High ceilings? Hang large statement pieces to showcase the possibilities.

4. Consider security. If you own expensive or rare works of art, consider having security hardware installed before you show your home. Not necessarily because of the potential for theft, but to ensure that your art doesn’t get knocked down or damaged during open houses or showings.
