How to Transport Art Safely

When you’re moving, it can be tempting to just get things packed away and into their new location as quickly and efficiently as possible. After all, moving is stressful, so why drag it out? But, if there’s one thing to spend a little extra time and care on when moving, it’s art. Fine art can easily become damaged by tears, breaking the frame, or even a temperature difference during a move.

Here are our top tips on how to transport art safely.

1. Always transport art vertically.
This way, you’ll ensure nothing gets stacked on top of it, and that it’s never places on a surface that puts it under pressure.

2. Works on paper should travel top up,
not on the side or upside down or the hinges that hold it in place may rip.

3. Keep it at a steady, moderate temperature.
Big changes in temperature or humidity can cause condensation on the glass.

4. Stack multiple pieced face to face and back to back:
This way, the hardware on the back of one frame does not scratch the frame of another.

5. Pad the corners.
Extra padding on the corners of your frames will prevent nicks.

6.  Tape the glass.
If it breaks it doesn’t damage the art.

Good luck with your move!
