How to Hang Pictures Securely

Last week, we covered four different wall art hanging techniques–from contemporary cable systems, to old-fashioned D-rings. But, besides choosing the correct style of picture hanging hardware for the style of your space and the type of art you’re hanging, it’s also important to choose the proper strength hardware, and the right reinforcements. Choosing picture hanging hardware in the right strength is the best way to ensure you’ll hang pictures securely. Here’s how to do it.

With the right hardware, each and every one of these pictures will stay put.

1. Figure out the weight of your art. The weight of your artwork will determine the strength of the hardware you need. There are two methods to figure out how much your artwork weighs. First, you can weigh yourself on a scale holding the art, and then again not holding the art. Subtract the second number from the first, and you will have the weight of your art. No scale handy? Try this method to calculate an approximate weight from Saatchi Art.

2. Choose the hardware for that weight. Most picture hanging hardware is rated on the package for weight. As ILevel, we always err on the side of caution and add extra screws or use over-rated hooks. One hole picture hooks are usually for 30 lbs., two hole/nail hooks for 50lbs. and three hole/nail hooks are for or either 75 lbs or 100lbs depending on the manufacturer.

3. Use reinforcements. The best place to hang art is on a wall stud. But, if that’s not an option and you’ll be installing hardware directly into drywall, try reinforcing it with wall anchors first. Tap-in expanding anchors or screw- in anchors (the most common kind) work well for lighter pieces, while Molly bolts or metal toggle bolts are a great option for heavier artwork.
