Must-See Shows at NYC X DESIGN

It’s a great time to be a design-lover in New York! This week kicked off the second annual NYC X DESIGN throughout the city — an 11-day series of fairs, trade shows, exhibits, talks and more covering all areas of art and design. Of course, we plan to attend as much of the programming as we can, but here’s a list of our can’t miss shows and events in art, fashion and furniture design.

1. Frieze Art Fair, May 9-12, Randall’s Island. Many of the events during the week have actually existed independently long before NYC X DESIGN was officially formed, and that included Frieze. The acclaimed art fair is one of the best shows of the year in New York, drawing more than 190 contemporary galleries from around the world.

2. BKLYN Designs, May 9-11, showrooms though out DUMBO. This juried exhibition features Brooklyn’s most innovative furnishings designers. There will also be a series of furnishings by Japanese designers, inspired by Brooklyn.

3. Fashion Institute of Technology Graduating Students Exhibition, May 9-12, FIT. The work of more the 800 of FIT’s graduating students will be on display during this expo at the school.

4. Wanted Design, May 16-19, Terminal Stores, Manhattan.  This year’s Wanted show will feature installations, products, interactive exhibits, a pop-up shop, workshops and more.

5. Industry City, May 10-20, Brooklyn. Industry City celebrate Brooklyn’s emerging place as a hub in the design world. It’s curated by Wanted Design, and will feature open studio tours, exhibitions, and lectures on subjects from woodworking to  3D printing.

5. The International Contemporary Furniture Fair, May 17-20, The Javits Center. A showcase of contemporary furniture from more than 600 exhibitors from 38 countries.
