Wall Decor We Love: The Classic Federalist Mirror

There are certain artists, motifs, and styles we see crop up over and over again on the walls of our clients. Though some of this ubiquitous decor can certainly be chalked up to trends (like typography or neon light art), other style remain popular simply because their classic beauty will never go out of fashion.

One of our favorite examples of the latter are Federalist mirrors (also known as eagle mirrors or convex mirrors). Though they’ve certainly experienced a resurgence over the last few years (try looking though a few issues of a decor magazine without spotting one), they’ve been a chic choice for wall decor for centuries: The earliest Federalist mirrors date back to the period for which they’re named, the late 18th century. While an original will run you upwards of $10,000, there are also plenty of reproductions to be had for far less. Either way, they make a beautiful choice for homes from classic to contemporary.

Here, a few of our favorite examples from client homes, as well as a few photos we’ve seen around the web.

1. A recent ILevel gallery wall project in New York City featured a federalist mirror as the focal point.

2. Here’s another example from on of our projects: the mirror here is centered over a console table and surrounded by art.

3. In an example from Elle Decor, here, the mirror is hung from the front of a bookcase (one of our favorite ideas).

4. In another example from Elle Decor, here the mirror is painted black to match the rest of the room.
