ILevel Installs for Mr. Brainwash & It’s A Thing

Poster for ItsAThing

We had the pleasure of working with friend of ILevel Nicola Stephenson recently on her collaboration with Los Angeles based street artist Mr. Brainwash. Nic created It’s A Thing, a new organization focused on changing perceptions and raising funds for head and neck cancer. 60,000 people are diagnosed with head and neck cancer each year, yet many Americans have little to no knowledge of this disease.

The inaugural event for It’s A Thing was a visual art experience of Mr. Brainwash’s work that took over 10,000 square feet of the iconic Starrett-Lehigh building.

All of the art in the exhibit pays homage to the vital functions made possible by the head and neck. Walking through the galleries you’ll see sculptures of headless angels, neon lights with positive messages like “Keep Smiling,” over-sized, multi-colored gumballs, and typewriters inviting viewers to sit down and tap away. ILevel installed many pieces in the exhibit, including the gallery wall seen below.

Net proceeds from the exhibit will be donated to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. “Since my fight with head and neck cancer just two and a half years ago, I have been eager to give back to the incredible specialists at MSK that supported me throughout my journey,” Stephenson explains. ILevel at the Kips Bay Decorator Show House

In case you missed it, here’s a chance to see ILevel’s work in six rooms at the Kips Bay Decorator Show House. This annual event brings together top design talent under one roof to benefit the Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club. ILevel provides professional art installation services for the designers who create these gorgeous spaces. Here are some of the designers with whom ILevel was pleased to collaborate this year.

Philip Mitchell Design created this comfortably luxurious sitting room. The focal point blue velvet sofa and surrounding chairs feature 26 pillows in 26 different patterns. We couldn’t get enough of the details in this room, including a collection of glass paperweights, brass candlesticks, and one of our favorite features, an upholstered deer head with antlers. ILevel hung 36 pieces of art on the walls including an early 60s photograph of Lee Radziwill looking as if she fully inhabits this room.

Jamie Drake and Caleb Anderson created this gold toned living room with adjacent bar. Mix a drink, take a seat in the coveted corner of the wrap around sofa, and contemplate the fabulous draped chandelier.

For Alessandra Branca’s breezy sitting room, ILevel installed a photograph of a Rhode Island beach by Tina Barney. This photograph works like a window in this room. I feel like I’m in a summer house gazing at my beach view.

Here’s a glimpse of David Netto’s living room, “Cherry Bitters,” with distinctive tobacco-colored walls, white wrapped books, modern furniture and pops of color.

ILevel installed this collection of hand carved wooden canes in an alcove of Stefan Steil’s room.

Brian del Toro designed this peaceful, feminine bedroom using an antique screen as inspiration for his color palette of green and taupe with accents of pink, blush, and rose.

Five Reasons You Should Hire Artists To Hang Your Pictures

“ILevel has the manpower to hang your art collection and the brainpower to chat about it over tea.”  The Franklin Report

Since the beginning 25 years ago, ILevel founder David Kassel has hired only visual artists to work on his top notch team of professional picture hangers. Many evenings and weekends you’ll find ILevel art installers in their studios engaged with their medium, whether it’s sculpture, painting, photography, drawing, printmaking, or collage. How does this practice give ILevel an edge among New York City professional art installation companies? When I surveyed our designer/installers, I heard five reasons you should hire artists to hang your pictures:

We Are Visual Thinkers: We’re those people you think of as having “an eye.” We have perspective and opinions about how artwork should be displayed and viewed. We’re passionate about art and design, and we’re always thinking visually. We have an understanding of color and composition that is sometimes different than an interior designer/decorator’s. “I’m asked all the time about what frame color would work with a certain piece, or in a certain room. To answer these questions I draw on my art education and talk about things like color harmonies and disharmonies.”

We Know What We’re Handling: As artists, we have a unique perspective regarding the meaning, history, and lineage of the objects we handle. “We can intelligently talk your ear off about most of the art that we see on our projects.” We also understand how pieces are constructed, so we’re aware of the strengths and weaknesses of materials and how to handle and install them safely. ‘How did the artist do this?’ comes up frequently in conversation with clients.

We Are Creative Problem Solvers: Yes, we engage in activities that are typically thought of as creative, like painting and drawing. And importantly, when it comes to art installation, we’re creative thinkers and problem solvers, too. The most rewarding projects are those that provide a challenge and require us to devise an innovative way to solve an installation problem.

We Care About What We’re Handling: We have a deep appreciation for other artists’ work. We understand the amount of time, creativity, and dedication that goes into each and every piece. And we treat each piece like we made it ourselves.

Art is Our Life: Our interest in art has been lifelong.Clients seem to appreciate that I have an MFA. The educational component, which represents an investment of time and money, seems to help them understand why I’m there doing what I’m doing, and shows that art isn’t simply an interest but a life pursuit.”

The benefits of having artists install your artwork is summed up beautifully in this quote from one of ILevel’s clients:

“ILevel did a spectacular job installing my artwork. Everyone who has seen it has raved about their work. What they did for me was to teach me, very subtly, how to look at art. I saw my collection in an entirely new light. This was a totally unexpected aspect of a very pleasant experience.”
